TASTING FOOD TASTING FREEDOM CL

21DDYDMBEZL._SL160_ TASTING FOOD TASTING FREEDOM CLA renowned anthropologist explores the history and meaning of eating in America.

Addressing issues ranging from the global phenomenon of Coca-Cola to the diets of American slaves, Sidney Mintz shows how our choices about food are shaped by a vast and increasingly complex global economy. He demonstrates that our food choices have enormous and often surprising significance.
“A buffet of information.”

Gael McCarthy, The New York Times
“A collection of thoughtful. . . . essays. [Mintz's] writing is intellectually lively and stylistically colorful.”

Colman Andrews, Saveur
Customer Review: Sugar, power, class, and meaning
This is an uneven book of essays on the anthropology of food by the well-known anthropologist, Sidney Mintz. Like many anthropologists these days, Mintz interprets local cultural phenomena within a broader global context, but without losing track of their insider meanings.

Several of the essays in this book concentrate on things sweet–sugar and its predecessor, honey. Mintz traces the history of rising sugar consumption and ties its wider availablity to perceptions of increased social status by the working class that consumed this former luxury item. In the title essay, he proposes a relationship between cooking choices and a sense of freedom among Caribbean slaves. In another piece, Mintz explores symbolic links between sugar and perceptions of morality and naturalness.

Not all of the essays are equally successful. The “Introduction” and the title essay are the best, in my opinion. “The Conquest of Honey by Sucrose” is also intriguing. The last two essays, one on high and low cuisine and the other on American food, are a bit muddled. One of the best things in the book is totally non-academic. Mintz’s wonderfully evocative preface about his father and his memories of food while growing up is a joy to read and almost worth the price of the book itself.
Customer Review: Underwhelming–best for undergrads
I enjoy Sidney Mintz’ work quite a bit, though this book left me a bit underwhelmed. It in no way compares to his _Sweetness and Power_, which is a wonderful work. Instead, _Tasting Food_ offers some nice little essays. The title essay, on slave/creole cuisines of the Caribbean, is by far an away the best, and it is well worth reading. The other essays are just okay, or in the case of the last two (about national and American cuisines), quite bad. Nice, light reading as a complement to other anthropological writing about food. Carole Counihan’s edited volumes are better. Diet Nutrition Drinks Buy Now

Vegetarianism: A History

417YVSDDR9L._SL160_ Vegetarianism: A History

Colin Spencer provides an in-depth account of vegetarianism. From prehistory to the present, he discusses those who came to vegetarianism by choice, from the religions who preach it such as Hinduism and Seventh-Day Adventism, to the individuals who practice it, including Leonardo da Vinci and, ironically, Adolf Hitler. Throughout history, vegetarians have been maligned and persecuted by their meat-eating brethren. Spencer looks at the psychology of abstention, the ideas behind a meat-free diet, as well as the environmental effects of meat production and the implications of genetic engineering. Although the vegetarian movement dates back to 600 B.C., it is only now becoming a practice valued by many who previously would have wondered, “Where’s the beef?”

Customer Review: A noble and eccentric history
This is a delightful social history of vegetarianism focusing primarily on the Western world and the individuals who pioneered “bloodless” cuisine and dietary practice. The section on this lifestyle in 18th century Europe & America is rich in the cast of remarkably thoughtful and reasonable little known characters of great passion who sought to bring the dharma of ahimsa to others. Within 50 miles of where I live there was a mid-19th century attempt at a vegetarian community established by British settlers along the Marmaton river in Bourbon County, Kansas. It lasted barely a year.

Heinerman New Encyclodedia of Fruits & Vegetables, Revised & Expanded Edition

51H44GS54VL._SL500_ Heinerman New Encyclodedia of Fruits & Vegetables, Revised & Expanded EditionCustomer Review: some helpful hints
There is some interesting knowledge here but using expensive and exotic vegetables to treat minor ailments seems irrational. Also, seeing an enema instruction next to a recipe is just plain gross.
Customer Review: Get well naturally!
Diet fads are of no interest to me. Knowing what different foods will do to my body, however, is a subject I’ve loved to study and talk about. This book was marvellous because it fed my quest for more knowledge of foods, in particular fruits and vegetables.

Customer Review: Health through food
While attending a natural therapeutics school in Albuquerque, our herbology instructor brought this book to class on the same day we had to choose a project to do for a 30′ herbal talk. Our group of four chose to do a cooking class based on this book. We were all impressed by relevance of food, herbs and health presented by the book. We were also impressed by the photography, which was accomplished by someone who knew what they were doing. And the recipes were relatively simple, which was a real plus for overly-burdened students.
The real payoff, however, came on the day of our presentation. Each group member prepared a different recipe and then discussed the preparation and how the herbs related to health. We also discussed the book, its simplicity and its wealth of information and then served our food to the class.
Each of our dishes, which included a nettle casserole, was an instant hit. The rest of the class were so impressed with the results of our preparations that everyone in the class except one ordered the book for their personal libraries.
Simple recipes, great tasting food, and health. What more could someone ask for in one book?
Customer Review: Look up a food you dislike and you will want to eat it!
Here’s a beautiful book for your kitchen baker’s rack with lots of recipes. Written in an easy to read format, including large, colorful photos of foods, this guide to healthy eating does everything for you but cook the food! This book provides the motivation to try new foods and recipes. It goes even further than just listing foods by categories to tell of their benefits for the body; it lists ailments and the specific foods to eat to combat them along with page numbers of the recommended recipes!

Worldwide Sport - R-T-D Pure Protein - Frosty Chocolate, 12 drinks

51QhGDxSNeL._SL160_ Worldwide Sport - R-T-D Pure Protein - Frosty Chocolate, 12 drinksCustomer Review: Very Good High Protein Drink … w/ low carbs
This drink is about as good as it gets for high protein drinks. Fortunately, it is very low in sugar/carbs. Serve cold after intense workouts. It is not a meal replacement, but it is good after a workout.
Customer Review: Protein that tastes great
Because of recent weight loss surgery, I must consume over 70g of protein daily. I can now eat very little. The cans of protein shake are tasty - in fact, I’ve tried quite a few and this is absolutely the best available. It has only 170 calories and 35g protein. Tastes almost like chocolate milk.
